Development update #6

Posted on Friday, December 31, 2010 in Development

Here’s the last development update of this year. There are some changes but none of them is very big.

  • Screen resolutions now fully supported, hopefully.
  • Added the camera mode CENTER, the mode will be changed to PLAYER if the resolution is to low.
  • Added the next three scenes that will make it in the V0.1.2 release.
  • Updated the Object system, example can be found in the Castle Hall scene.
  • Rewritten the rendering system, now a Camera Class handles locations.
  • Compile script added, which also generates a run script.
  • PoA is now 100% fps independent and VSync is automatically enabled.
  • Improved the castle tileset a bit.

Next on the list are:

  • Adding some way to handle cut-scenes (maybe EventPoints that can interact with the AI of an NPC).
  • Make a tileset for the outside of the castle.

The next update will probably be mid January because of some family situations.
But don’t worry, when I get back on PoA I’ll try my best to get V0.1.2 out end January/ begin February.

BTW, I’ve posted some suggestion of what could be implemented next in PoA.
You can find them here: Suggestions

Resolution support

Posted on Monday, December 27, 2010 in Development

I’ve just committed revision 35 and it contains some big changes.

  • First of all the scene doesn’t get stretched and scaled but instead more tiles are displayed.
  • The player now moves through the scene instead of just being drawn in the middle.
  • Made a Camera class which handles the moving over the scene.

The following things are still to be done before resolution support is done:

  • Tweak HUD and Menu to fully support different resolutions.
  • Add and load the POINT mode in the camera.
  • Fix ConversationPoints getting started before sliding ends.

Development update #5

Posted on Thursday, December 23, 2010 in Development

Here’s the fifth development update. There’s some progress.
Most of them are fixing some annoyances, thanks to the user made video.

  • Added notification system.
  • Fixed music bug.
  • Updated the HomeInn scene (added conversation points).
  • Improved the Castle tileset.
  • Extended item system (including collision)

Here you can see the improved tileset:

Now the goal is to extend the story by adding the King and Scientist.
Program the “Artefact” puzzle and add the artefact puzzle.

Implement some sort of cut-scenes system to handle the King talking to you and leaving the scene.

Pages Of AdventureI was surprised when I found this video. In this video an user is running PagesOfAdventure eeepc and records it with xvidcap.

Whilst playing PagesOfAdventure he also gave some feedback. Watch the video here:

Development update #4

Posted on Wednesday, December 8, 2010 in Development

It’s been a while since the last update and there’s some progress. The main changes are in the light system. It’s now possible for a scene to configure the night color, and make it always night.

The game

Beside the changes in the light system I’ve also implemented Windows and MacOSX support. Although it doesn’t work because of the missing natives I can assure that Windows and MacOSX support will be in the V0.1.2 release!

For the V0.1.2 release there’s not much programming left, most the things left to be done is artwork.

Beside the development towards V0.1.2 I’m also going to start developing an editor for PagesOfAdventure.

The site

The site hasn’t been updated that much. As said before the forums are now powered by phpBB. Now there’s a new theme!

That’s it for now!

Programmer art

Posted on Saturday, December 4, 2010 in Content

Sadly our artist stop contribution because he’s to busy. But for the V0.1.2 release I still need a lot of artwork. So I decided to make them myself!

It took me very long to complete the castle tileset. And this is deviantly going be labled Placeholder. Here’s a quick preview of the tileset:

I think the transition from stone to wall is a bit hard. And the wall and floor are very repeated.

And The doors don’t look that good. But it’s better than nothing. I’ll commit the new tileset + scene soon.

Development update #3

Posted on Saturday, November 27, 2010 in Development

Here’s the third Development update. It’s been a week since the last update and sadly there’s not much progress.

The Game

This time there’s absolutely no progress in the game. But I’ve done some thinking and I’m going to make minor release in between the major releases. So instead of V0.2 V0.1.2 will be the next release.

The Site

Maybe you’ve noticed that the forum is removed. But don’t worry I replaced it with phpBB. The main reason for this is that I’ll have more control over the forums. And now I can make a theme.

Beside the forum move there’s also a new Main Page. The Download page and the GetInvolved pages now show that they’re under construction.

That’s all!

Development update #2

Posted on Saturday, November 20, 2010 in Development

It’s been a while since my last post, but don’t worry the game is still being actively developed. Although the progress I’ve made isn’t much it’s worth mentioning.

The Game

One great feature has been added to PagesOfAdventure: Lights. A scene can now have lights. They are only visible when it’s dark outside.

Beside the light I’ve fixed the bug regarding the fact that stepping on a ConversationPoint through a swappoint didn’t invoke the conversation. There was only one thing I discovered, the example in the HomeInn scene isn’t correct. It also gets invoked when you walk past the Old farm and on the conversationPoint. How and if I’m going to fix it, I don’t know.

The site

As you’ve might have seen the site has 0% progress. This is mainly because I was working hard on the lights. But I hope the bring a big update of the site very soon!

Development Progress

Posted on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 in Development

Just a little update on the progress of PagesOfAdventure. We’re working towards version 0.2 but it’s far from finished.

The game

The story hasn’t been extended yet and there’s no new content. As for the programming I’ve made a start on the ConversationPoint and I’m planning to start with the ResourceManager soon.

The website

The website hasn’t changed lately. The only big change was the new blog and blog theme. We’ve also updated the wiki. Most NPCs entries have been made. And the scenes will follow soon.

The primary objective for the site is to make the GetInvolved site and add tutorials on the wiki on how to make content.
